Case Study: Perkins School for the Blind
Since 2020, the Lavelle Fund has supported scholarships for special education teachers from Latin America to participate in the Perkins Educational Leadership Program (ELP) for advanced training in the education of blind children with multiple disabilities, program development and leadership. Through the ELP, Perkins seeks to build local leadership capacity to: (1) help schools and school systems recover from the disruption of the pandemic and learn from the crisis to establish flexible, adaptive approaches to learning, (2) create educational programs for children with vision loss and multiple disabilities where there are none, (3) improve quality of education and rate of school enrollment for these children, (4) empower and support parents as part of a child’s education team, and (5) catalyze systemic changes in the inclusion of children with visual impairment and complex disabilities in public education.
